Some "SparkNotes" with our Salvation History: 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

Sparknotes?  CliffNotes?
·      Well here is a quick summary before we get to our first reading: Saul and David
o   God called a people to follow Him
o   God was the leader of these people
o   Genesis, Exodus, Moses, cross the Red Sea, watched through the desert (Numbers), Joshua (leader), Judges
o   Then we had Samuel: God as our king or a king like everyone else
o   Welcome Saul
o   Who was a bad king, and was jealous of David, tracking him down and trying to kill him
o   Now to our reading:
o   But David said to Abishai, “Do not harm him,
for who can lay hands on the LORD’s anointed and remain unpunished?”
So David took the spear and the water jug from their place at Saul’s         head,
and they got away without anyone’s seeing or knowing or awakening.
All remained asleep,
because the LORD had put them into a deep slumber.
o   The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.
Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp,
I would not harm the LORD’s anointed.”
Then let’s quickly with Jesus
·      Similarly, though deeper, Jesus challenged to his disciples, like David challenged his general
o   They had enemies…just like we have enemies today
o   And lets pause with that…who are the “enemies” in your heart—your boss?  Your classmate?  Your business competition?  Your opposite political venues?
·      To you who hear I say,
love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you
.”
·      If we forgive loved ones, that is the same as everyone else, if we offer a gift that we receive with a gift back, that is the same as everyone else
·      Jesus is pointing us, that we, as Christians, must act like Jesus Christ acted: sacrificial love—agape
