What is the ascension of Jesus Christ?: 7th Sunday of Easter: Ascension

Listen the homily here.

Notes:

What happens with the ascension of Jesus Christ?
·      He goes to heaven
·      He prepares his disciples with the power of the Holy Spirit
Have you imagined what you would have seen?
·      Acts 1: “…as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.”
·      He wasn’t in a space ship
·      He wasn’t in a helicopter
·      And he wasn’t “going up”
o   He was going to a different dimension
·      The imagination is almost unseen with our physical eyes
The apostles then heard from the angels:
·      "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?  This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven."
·      Go to work!
·      Jesus said earlier:
o   “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
·      And in Ephesians:
o   And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.”
As Jesus’ earthly manifestation doesn’t stop…it begins with a new chapter
·      Now he sits by his father
·      He sees through divine eyes
·      He leads his Church, his people and his won on earth
·      He has told to each of us:
o   Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
Now he will win as he sends the Holy Spirit which we will hear next weekend
