(Listen to this homily here).
“In this is love: not
that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for
our sins.” An important fact
to always remember is that God loved us first. He knew us before we were born—before the dawn of time. He knew the day of our birth and the
day of our death. He has loved us
for all eternity. We ought to
respond to God’s love with our own praise, gratitude and adoration. Yet we must never forget that our
relationship begins with Him.
Jesus—God’s
son who was sent out of love for us—did many things while accompanying us on
earth. He preached, healed,
taught, fed, forgave and even chastised the people he encountered. These various aspects of his ministry
can be summed up in a word: love. “When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was
moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus fed the hungry crowd, but he did
not provide just enough. He gave
abundantly.
God
does the same. In loving us first
He continues to give us gifts and graces that are overflowing. We thank God today for His eternal and
infinite love for us and ask for the grace to respond well to both Him and our
neighbor.
