Christmas gifts and love: Daily Mass Homily--Wednesday, January 7th, 2015 (School Mass)

(Listen to this homily here).

Well it is good to have you all back at Mass.
First, I’m wondering something.  It is January 7th, 2015—why do we still have a Christmas tree up in Church?  Shouldn’t it have been taken down already?  No, it is still Christmas!  You bet.  We still celebrate the Christmas season through this weekend.
Now what were the best gifts you got over Christmas?  iPad…tablet…games…  Holy smokes, you are very blessed.  I don’t even have a tablet!  Now think harder—what was the best gift we all received for Christmas?  Every one of us got this.  Jesus!
And what did Jesus do for us?  He is dead.  [Lost it a little at this point!]  True enough, Jesus came to die for our sins.  He came as a little baby to save us.
In a word, Jesus came to give us love.  Now what does it mean to love?  To care for someone.  To hug someone.  I want you all to know something very important.  Love isn’t always a feeling.  For instance, N, would you want to wake up in the middle of the night to change your baby sister’s smelly diaper?  No!  Do you think your mom likes doing this?  Does it make her happy?  No!  But she does it anyway because she loves your sister.
Jesus came to save us and to show us how to love.  He is the reason we still celebrate Christmas.  Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
