(Listen to this homily here).
One of the titles of Jesus is Christ the Teacher.
The
opening chapter of Mark tells us: “Jesus
came to Capernaum with his followers, and on the sabbath he entered the
synagogue and taught. The
people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having
authority and not as the scribes.” The last verses of our reading reiterates the crowds’ reaction:
“What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean
spirits and they obey him.”
We
just celebrated Christmas, remembering that Jesus, for a time, was made “less than the angels”. As a man, everything Jesus did teaches
us both about God and ourselves.
His private work and life as well as his public ministry—preaching,
forgiving, healing, serving—teach us
truth. And a big part of this
ministry was in his explicit teaching, as we heard in Mark.
How
is Christ your teacher? How do
seek the truth in our faith? Do
you learn from the Bible? Have you
picked up a CD or book (which are readily available at our parish) to grow in
your faith?
As
we begin a new year, challenge yourself to learn more about our faith through
Christ the Teacher. He will always
teach us the truth.
