Your prophetic role: Daily Mass Homily--Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

A common feature between the Major Prophets is their call by God for a mission.  Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Isaiah were all individually selected, received God’s Word in a unique way, and were commissioned to proclaim God’s message to His people.
Ezekiel’s vocation story was captured in the first reading: “He said to me: Son of man, eat what is before you; eat this scroll, then go, speak to the house of Israel.”  Ezekiel did, reporting, “I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.”  He was then summoned to take what he had received and give it to others: “Son of man, go now to the house of Israel, and speak my words to them.”
Never underestimate your call to be God’s prophet today.  You were baptized into Christ’s prophetic, priestly and kingly mission and it is your job to preach His Word by your words and actions.  The Second Vatican Council emphasized the importance of the laity in spreading the Gospel.  In our ordinary work, we priests are meant to help you become holy.  You are meant to make the world holy.
I pray that you consume the Word of God and find it very sweet.  I pray that you will share what you have received and faithfully proclaim the Gospel today.
