In the course of salvation history God used covenants to
expand His chosen people. A simple
definition of a covenant is a promise that lasts forever and in the Old
Testament this was forged between God and men.
The
first covenant took place in the Garden of Eden between God and his finest
creation—Adam and Eve. From this
couple God created a new covenant with Noah, adding people along the way: (a
family), Abraham (a tribe), Moses (a nation) and David (a kingdom).
Jeremiah
prophecies about the new covenant God will establish: “The days are coming, says the LORD, when
I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah…I
will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their
God, and they shall be my people.” This new covenant was sealed on the cross by the blood of
Jesus Christ.
Jesus’
fulfilled the Old and established the New. By sacrificing his life he definitively established his
Church (which was prefigured in the Gospel), which remains in God’s covenantal
relationship today. Anyone is
welcome to join as Jesus’ opened the doors of his family wide open.
We
thank God for the gift of living in relationship with Him. We pray that we may follow Him closely
today, living out the new covenant established by Jesus Christ.
