Storms in our spiritual life: Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

The violent storm
·      Spiritual life
·      Storms in our heart and soul
·      “Lord, Save us!  We are perishing!”

·      “great calm”

"...the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.": Monday, June 27th, 2016

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

Here is a great gift that we each have:  your bed.
·      Mattress
·      Pillow
·      Blankets

In Mark: “A scribe approached and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”

Jesus must be #1…period
·      We must follow Jesus Christ
·      Not our possessions, not our money, not even our family!
·      But Jesus must be the center of our lives

“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God": 13th Sunday Ordinary Time

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.”
·      Psalm 63
·      I hope, and I pray that you follow on of the verses in Psalm 63
o   “O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched lifeless and without water.”
How are our souls thirsty or parched?
·      With a bad day
·      Being sick, injures, surgery
·      Not having a job
·      Having without a house, or food, or water
·      Those who are lonely
·      Those who have addictions
·      Those who have depression, anxiety
·      With tough stuff in life: health, family or friends who have passed away
How are you thirsty for God?
·      Even if life is great or challenging
There are several different ways to drink God
·      1.) Praying
o   One of the most questions that ask a priest: how do you pray?
o   Well…praying is growing in a relationship with God
o   Think of the different ways in your relationships of your spouse, kids, friends
§  Hanging out
§  Face to face
§  Phone, facebook, twitter
§  Meals
§  Games
o   There are many different ways to speak with God
§  In your heart
§  Reading the Bible: God speaks to you at any time!
§  Reading spiritual books
§  Be quiet with God (Adoration, at home)
§  A journal
§  Talking with other people about God
§  Praying with other people: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
·      Dinners at home
·      Meetings
·      2.)  Sacraments
o   We can receive two sacraments every day:
§  Eucharist and Confession
·      Eucharist = Body and Blood of Jesus Christ
o   To feed our souls
o   To drink our souls
·      Confession
o   Forgiveness, mercy, compassion
o   Feeding your soul
o   Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, marriage, ordained
§  Ways that God give us strength, courage, gifts
§  Through His gift to drink our souls
·      3.)  Look to others, not ourselves
o   Drinking of the poor (as well as the other ways to give gifts and mercy to others: food, clothes, visiting in hospitals and jails, those who have died)
o   Presence
o   The most powerful prayers we have, is when we are praying in our different situations
o   And the most we help others, the more we receive from God for our souls
“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.”
·      Reflect on these three areas: praying, Sacraments, helping others

As a family in our churches, diocese, state, country and world helps each of our souls to drink of God!

Jesus, Simon the Pharisee and a Woman: 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

This time of the year, there are many Graduation Parties
·      Family, friends, relatives, teachers, coaches
·      I remember that when I graduated some people showed up—without being invited!
·      Some people I didn’t even like
This weekend we heard in Luke 7:36-8:3—a big party
·      Simon the Pharisee
o   Big dinner
o   Invited Jesus to this feast
o   Was Jesus a friend?  Family?  Relative?
o   No…probably Simon had curiosity about Jesus at this event
·      And then there was a woman—no name—no invite
o   This is what we heard: “Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears.  Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment.”
o   Now, could you imagine that this happened at a graduation (or wedding) party today?
·      Simon thought: “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner."
Jesus—not the center of the party—not Simon.  Jesus taught many people there…especially the “boss”
·      Jesus said: "Do you see this woman?  When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.  You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered.  You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment.”
And then, Jesus forgave her sins!
Also, Jesus put Simon on his head:
·      He spoke to a woman
·      He taught to Simon—not the other way
·      He spoke with someone “outside” of Simon’s group
·      He forgave her sins
This week, imagine your own party, your birthday, your wedding, your anniversary
·      Who would be like—Simon or this unnamed woman?
·      Or, in another question: how would Jesus visit your party?

Death: 10th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

Two men, two mothers and two children
·      Two mothers
o   1 Kings 17:17-24: a mistress in Zarephath of Sidon (at the house of a widow)
o   Luke 7:11-17: a widow in Nain
·      Two children died
o   Do you know the brutal situation?
o   1 Kings 17: “The son of the mistress of the house fell sick, and his sickness grew more severe until he stopped breathing.”
o   Luke 7: “As [Jesus] drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.”
·      Two men
o   Elijah
§  He said: “O LORD, my God, let the life breath return to the body of this child… The LORD heard the prayer of Elijah; the life breath returned to the child’s body and he revived.”
§  Elijah was named, “a man of God”
o   Jesus
§  Our savior
§  He said to the mother, “Do not weep.”
§  He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the bearers halted, and he said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!”
§  Jesus was named by the crowd, “a great prophet,” “God has visited his people”
·      These events were over 900 years in time
Now, how does this happen today, especially when someone dies?
·      Losing a child is the worst event
o   Stillborn children
o   SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
o   Cancer
o   Accidents
o   Fire
o   Suicide
·      Anyone in your family
o   Parents, Grandparents, Great-Grandparents, Great-Great Grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters, friends
God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—loves us and is here for each of you
·      Our Father gave his Son who died a brutal way—crucifixion
·      Come to His house—Church
·      Come to Adoration—His Son
·      His Word in the Bible
o   John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Mother Mary—prays for us, loves for us too
·      Her only Son died on the Cross
·      The Seven Sorrows
·      Hail Mary “pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death”
·      The Rosary
Your Church—our family here at church and in the world helps you
·      Many parishioners—EMs, relationships and visiting
o   Thank you
·      The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
·      Funeral
·      Dcn. Fran and I in prayers, funerals
·      Mass—offer an intercession of your loved one (see each week in our bulletin)
In 120 years, each of us will pass away
·      Get ready today for your loved ones, and your self
·      Bring dying, death into the light of Jesus Christ to pray and prepare for eternity

Laws: Thursday, June 2nd, 2016

Listen to the homily here.

Oops...I should have said 613 laws in Leviticus!

Notes:

How many laws are in the Old Testament?

A Scribe (many against Jesus) asked a question to Jesus: “Which is the first of all the commandments?”

The first is this: Hear, O Israel!  The Lord our God is Lord alone!  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.  The second is this:  You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  There is no other commandment greater than these.”

“is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices…”

Big answer

And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God

Paul and Timothy: Wednesday, June 1st, 2016

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

“Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God for the promise of life in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dear child…”
·      Relationship between an elder priest and a young priest
·      Paul the teacher, Timothy a disciple

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.”
·      We must not be cowards!
·      The Spirit cave us: power, love, self-control
·      Pray, pray, pray

“On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.”
·      Was Paul a coward?
o   Nope
o   “I am not ashamed…for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident”

How are each of you confident today?
