The foolishness of this world: Daily Mass Homily--Thursday, September 4th, 2014

St. Paul encourages the Corinthians: “If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise.  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God…”  These words are crucial for us as our world is full of foolishness.
One of the greatest errors of our society is that it devalues many segments of human persons.  Our secular world sees value only in money, youth, power, fame and production.  Those who cannot contribute to such a system—the elderly, unborn, handicapped or unlearned—are left on the fringes.
In radical contrast the Church has always upheld the dignity of every person, regardless of their skills, money or status in the world.
If you are feeling left out in society, take to heart Jesus’ words to Peter: “Do not be afraid!”  As Christians, we do not need to be afraid of aging.  We do not need to be afraid of illness.  We do not need to be afraid of death itself!  Jesus loves each of us so much that he died on the cross.
May we live in confidence that where society may reject us, the Church is always there to uphold our dignity.
