Daily Mass Homily: Friday, March 1st, 2013

There are many parallels between Joseph (in Genesis) and Jesus.
Both were the beloved sons of their father.  Joseph was the firstborn son of Jacob’s wife Rachel and Jesus the Son of God sent to rescue the world.  Both began their primary mission at the age of thirty and along the way were arrested despite their innocence.
Greatest of all, both Joseph and Jesus were sent to feed the multitudes.  Joseph went before his family into Egypt, where his prudent leadership prepared the Egyptians for a seven-year famine.  Genesis reports that the whole world came to Joseph to eat.  Jesus came to feed us in the famine of our sinfulness.  The food he gives is His own flesh and blood—food that leads to eternal life.
As we come to Mass again this morning we thank God for His providence in history.  He provided for Joseph and his family in the past, and sustains us in the present with the Eucharist.
