Daily Mass Homily: Thursday, January 31st, 2013

We have been working through the letter of the Hebrews this past week.  It is a very dense letter.  I don’t mean this to sound negative, just to say that it is packed with theological and spiritual insights and must be chewed on slowly, not devoured.
Tradition ascribes this letter to St. Paul, though some scholars think a different person wrote it.  Yet there is more agreement as to the purpose of this letter—it was a homily to be read at Mass.
There is a ton of information in Hebrews 10 from which we read today.  In seven short verses the sacred author addresses Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament, Jesus as our high priest, Baptism (“our hearts sprinkled clean”), creed (“our confession”), good works, love and Church unity.
All of this is written for the Hebrews, and us, to live out the Good News of Jesus Christ.  As Jesus says in the Gospel, we are not to take the lamp of our faith and hide it, but to hold it for the whole world to see.
