Daily Mass Homily: Friday, January 4th, 2013

This morning we hear what the heart of evangelism, or spreading the Gospel, is.  After hearing the preaching of John the Baptist, which we heard yesterday, the disciples ask Jesus where he is staying.  He answers, "Come, and you will see."
We are all here at Mass today because we have answered Jesus' call to come and see Him.  We have Jesus as part of our lives and have seen His works.
Yet our faith is not only about our own experiences.  Notice that it is Andrew, one of the two disciples who heard John the Baptist's declaration, who immediately shares his experience.  He tells his brother: "We have found the Messiah."
Andrews brother is none other than Simon, who after seeing Jesus receives a new name--Cephas, or Peter.  Already we have a hint of Peter's role as this new name means rock--the rock on which Christ will build His church.  Thanks to Andrew's seeing Jesus and helping his brother do the same, our first pope was brought to faith in Jesus.
We pray for the grace to continue to come and see Jesus and help others do the same.
