Wisdom: 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Listen to the homily here.

Notes:

Do you remember the gifts of the Holy Spirit?
·      Isaiah 11:2: “And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”
·      Wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord
·      And today our readings look into some thoughts of wisdom
Let’s start with Jesus’ teaching
·      Two parables, one with tower, another with a battle
o   Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work
the onlookers should laugh at him
…”
o   That takes wisdom
Then lets listen again from our first reading, the book of Wisdom in the wisdom books
·      “…who ever knew your counsel, except you had given wisdom
and sent your holy spirit from on high?   And thus were the paths of those on earth made straight
.”
Finally, seek wisdom in two types
·      Naturally like Jesus taught about that tower
o   Or those who have learned and experienced within your job, your parenthood, your coaching
·      And the Holy Spirit gifts bring us into our journey with God
o   To discern the wisdom to follow God, evangelize to grow God’s Kingdom and especially to use spiritual wisdom to learn how to share the Good News, meaning that speaking about God is different with each person
Proverbs 4:7: “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.”
