At the end of the Easter Season, we listened to Jesus’ “Priestly Prayer” in John 17. During this time, I was honed into a simple phrase to his disciples—and us today: “I [Jesus] have given them [his disciples] the glory you [the Father] gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one…” (John 17:22).
God is one, one God with three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Thus, Jesus taught us to be one as well.
We must be one with God. We must be one with our family. We must be one with each other.
As we celebrate with our graduate students at our Baccalaureate Mass, I hope that they, too, are one. As they move to their next steps in their lives, the relationship with their families, friends, classmates, teammates, and God Himself will still be with them to connect them to the one.
I also continue to pray for this unity within our parishes, our parishioners, our school, our diocese and our Catholic family. And, we must grow with our brothers and sisters in other denominations, as we Christians are following our Savior, Jesus Christ.
As Jesus explained his ordination—his consecration—as our high priest, he wanted his followers to be one. As he did not want division, persecution, violence or separation, he merely told us that we “may be one.”
God Bless!
