We catch the Israelites obeying God in our first reading: “Whenever the cloud rose from the Dwelling,
the children of Israel would set out on their journey. But if the cloud did not lift, they
would not go forward; only when it lifted did they go forward.” Admittedly, the Israelites didn’t
always obey God and frequently complained, grumbled and disobeyed Him—but they
got the basics right.
The
most basic principle in our spiritual lives is just this—obey God. Is he asking you to go forward, or
remain? Where is He leading you in
your life?
On
the memorial of St. Alphonsus Liguori—the father of moral theology—it is also
worth noting that we must follow the Church’s moral teachings. In our society many act like the
Israelites in their sinfulness by complaining, grumbling and complaining. Yet God has given us the Church as our
Mother to guide us in life and help us excel in living and we must follow
her. When she moves in an issue,
we must too. When she remains, so
should we.
May
we always follow God and His Church, and like the Israelites, be delivered from
the bondage of modern society.
